Literacy
Our Literacy curriculum aims to develop children’s love of reading, writing and discussion. One of our priorities is helping children read and develop their all-important comprehension skills. We recognise the importance of nurturing a culture where children take pride in their writing, can write clearly and accurately and adapt their language and style for a range of contexts. We want to inspire children to be confident in the art of speaking and listening and who can use discussion to communicate and further their learning. Children are given opportunities to explore a range of text types linked to their topic. Where possible, our literacy curriculum is enriched through trips, experiences and workshops. We believe that children need to develop a secure knowledge-base in Literacy, which follows a clear pathway of progression as they advance through the primary curriculum. We believe that a secure basis in literacy skills is crucial to a high quality education and will give our children the tools they need to participate fully as a member of society.
Early Reading
There have been recent changes to the way in which the government advises Phonics should be taught in schools. All schools are now required to use a validated SSP (systematic, synthetic, phonics) programme to teach daily Phonics lessons. At Rosary we have taken this advice, carefully considered our options, and we are now excited to announce that all teaching of Phonics and Early Reading will be done through our new SSP programme, ‘Little Wandle, Letters and Sound Revised’. Staff have received the appropriate training and resources are in place to support its implementation. Information for parents about Little Wandle can be found here:

Friday 8 May 2026 Catherine Barr - Author Visit We were delighted to welcome author Catherine Barr to our school for a wonderful visit all about her book The Colours of Nature. She explained the inspiration behind the different colours featured in the book and shared some of her favourite animals, including the amazing pink dolphin. Catherine then gave us the chance to become illustrators ourselves, guiding us step by step as we learned how to draw the pink dolphin from her book. To make the day even more special, she kindly signed our books for us too! It was a colourful, creative, and unforgettable experience that left everyone smiling and inspired!
