Design & Technology
Design and Technology at Rosary gives children the opportunity to solve real and relevant problems through creativity, ingenuity and practical skill. It is a subject that blends imagination with precision — asking children to design with a purpose in mind, make with care and skill, and evaluate honestly and thoughtfully.
Across EYFS to Year 6, children work through a clear cycle of designing, making and evaluating. They explore a range of contexts including structures, mechanisms, textiles, food technology and electrical systems, developing their understanding of materials and processes as they progress through school. Children learn to generate and communicate ideas, select appropriate tools and materials, and use their hands and minds together to bring their designs to life.
Food technology is an important part of our D&T curriculum. Children have opportunities to cook and prepare food, learning about nutrition, hygiene and where our food comes from. These skills and this knowledge connect to our wider school commitment to health and wellbeing, and give children practical life skills they will carry with them long after they leave Rosary.
D&T at Rosary is taught with strong links to Science, Maths and Computing, helping children see how skills and knowledge work together in the designed world. We want children to leave Rosary with an appreciation of good design and the confidence to tackle problems creatively — qualities that will serve them in whatever path they choose.
