We have loved celebrating Science Week! The theme this year is time. We discussed lots of different activities on Explorify and completed an investigation to see the effect different substances have on ice melting. We tested baking soda, sugar, sand and salt. We also had a control group – we left some ice without a substance to see how quickly this melted.
We made sure that we used the same amount of substances each time – we added a table spoon to each bowl of 4 ice cubes. We checked the ice regularly. We found that ice covered in salt and the control group melted the quickest. The ice covered in sand took the longest amount of time. The baking soda also took a long time and the substance seemed to almost act as a ‘coat’ protecting the ice from melting! We loved discussing our predictions and whether we were correct!
