Last Friday, 13 extremely lucky students had the opportunity to travel to Google Head Quarters and compete in the Camden & Islington Chess Tournament. The day began with some lessons and brain games from professional chess instructors who challenged and prepared the players for their upcoming matches. After the lunch break, our 13 Chess stars played off in an open tournament against some of Camden & Islington’s best strategic thinkers. Competitors ranged in age from Year 3 to Year 6 and the competition was extremely tight. Some matches lasted no longer than 2 minutes as players forced their opponents into checkmate.

After the tournament had finished we were lucky enough to gain special access into the ‘Grand Master World Chess Championship’ . Being the opening day of the event, the room was full of journalists, television reporters and photographers all capturing this special occasion. We were lucky enough to watch the opening ceremony and see the start of the high pressure opening games. Sitting no more than 10 metres away from us was the World Grand Master Champion, Norway’s, Magnus Carlson.

Overall, it was a fantastic day full of learning and competition. Our 13 Chess Stars were brilliant Rosary ambassadors throughout the day and showed tremendous sportsmanship. Visiting Google, playing in the tournament and watching Grand Master professionals was an absolute privilege and one that all our students will never forget.

I’d like to send an enormous congratulations to Noah (Year 3) who took out the best Year 3 player of the tournament, scoring a staggering 9 points. What’s even more impressive is the fact he won all these matches playing against Year 4,5,6 students. A brilliant individual effort that was well deserved. A special mention also goes to Lucas, Phillipa, Ellie, Jayden and Teddy who all finished high up in the field. Congratulations!
