On Monday 20th November, Year 3 (both Flamingos and Kingfsher year 3 students) went on a very special opera trip to Covent Garden.
After three weeks of practising our singing, making spooky scenery and developing our acting skills, we were ready to take part in the interactive performance of Hansel and Gretel.
The Opera was performed at the stunning 17th Century venue of St Paul’s Church, Covent Garden. We had a super view and aisle seats that helped us get really close to the amazing performers, who walked around us in a ‘promenade’ performance.
We joined in with the songs and dances we had learned and helped the Sandman (narrator) make decisions about the shape of the story as the opera went along. We all felt like such an important part of the show
The opera singers were amazing and we couldn’t quite believe how beautiful and powerful their voices were.
After the opera, Mrs Wright took us on a walking tour around Covent Garden, taking in the sights of the street performers, the Royal Opera House, the Inspiration Bridge and the Royal Ballet School.
Our walking tour concluded with a visit to the world-famous Covent Garden covered Piazza where we were lucky enough to watch a wonderful String Quartet. They played Pachabel’s Canon (Mrs Dawson’s favourite) and 2 opera overtures: The Barber of Seville by Puccini and The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart….maybe someone told them we were on an Opera trip!
We feel so lucky to have had this unique experience thanks to the generosity of the Concordia Foundation. We will never forget it!

I enjoyed going to watch Hansel and Gretel in the opera version!!!
I also enjoyed watching the man juggle real sharp knifes on a tall , big one wheeled bicycle. It was really cool!!!!!!!

I love reading fairytales such as Hansel and Gretel . I would love to hear it in Opera one day! I hope u had a good day,Yr 3.
You know there are lots of great video clips of this Opera online if you search for ‘Hansel and Gretel, by Englebert Humperdinck’ perhsps with an adult to help you find a good one! Or you could listen to the whole Opera on Spotify / Apple Music if you have access. I am going to try to get a CD to keep in school for us to listen to also.

I didn’t go because I wasn’t well also my mummy was going so I was upset. But I had fun at my grandad and I was playing with him
