How does the blood in our body transport oxygen?

In Science we have been learning about animals including humans. We have looked at how to keep our bodies healthy, labelled the main bones in our body and learnt about the human’s Circulatory System. When looking at the Circulatory System we concentrated on how the blood transports oxygen to the different parts of our body. We learnt how the oxygenated blood leaves the left side of the heart and deoxygenated blood returns to the right hand side of the heart. This then travels to the lungs where the blood collects oxygen and become oxygenated again. It then returns to the left side of the heart and the process starts all over!

We selected individuals to be the parts of the body and the rest of us were the blood cells. We went to the left side of the heart and collected a red card which represented oxygenated blood. We then went to a part of the body and gave the child there our card. This was then turned to blue, representing deoxygenated blood as the oxygen had been given to the part of the body. We then returned to the heart who pumped us to the lungs to gather more oxygen which then turned our card red again.

  4. I really enjoyed doing this fun activity!

  5. When we did this activity I did not know that we had that many blood cells in our body, it was fun!

  7. It was a fun lesson Mrs McGrory. Some children were body parts and some were blood cells! The blood cells travelled through the heart!

This sounded like so much fun! My daughter wanted to tell her teacher all about it so that they could have a go at her school!
