What is the function of a stem?

On Friday we continued looking at plants in Science. We put carnations in blue water which had been dyed with food colouring. We dissected the stem of a carnation and discovered that the inside of the stem was blue! This prompted a lot of discussion about how the colour had got inside the plant and we concluded that the blue water in the vase had travelled inside the stem up to the leaves and flower.

Pelicans enjoyed this investigation a lot and it made the children think about how plants can still receive water even if they do not have roots anymore!

  4. I enjoyed this experiment a lot because it was fun cutting the stem to see how it really transported the water. It was a very enjoyable lesson.??????

  5. I have really enjoyed doing Science this half-term.

  6. I really enjoyed our science topic.

  7. I wonder wether a plant is more likely to die slower or quicker if a bee takes pollen from it?

  8. I also wonder wether there are any plants that can change their colour during there life.

  9. I like doing science.

  10. I do also like doing science like Athina. In science I love doing investigations. I wonder how long it takes for the blue water to suck into the the stem of the plant.

  11. I like doing this because we got to see what was inside the corenation.
