Our Week In The Words of Amelia

We have had an amazing week in Kingfishers class, with lots of new learning.

Our new topic is Rainforests which is Geography and Science, this half term we are focusing on Geography. We recapped on some KS1 learning on the seven continents then we found the equator, which is an invisible line around the widest part of the earth, this means places on the equator are closer to the sun so they are really hot. We also found out where the Topics of Cancer and  Capricorn are, we discovered that all rainforests in between these two lines are tropical, all other rainforests are temperate, and the only continent without a rainforest is Antartica. I have really enjoyed the learning this week as it was really interesting and children have also been finding out their own interesting facts, we call these Bobby Dazzlers, extra exciting facts that no one else knows. Christian and Delina found our class Bobby Dazzlers this week when they found out there was an idiot fruit. We also got our first Rosary Topic Treasure which has all the key information about our learning for the topic on one page, it’s great becasue it has all the important facts for us to take home and share with our parents.

Our learning in literacy has also been about rainforests, last week we wrote poems about rainforests using figurative language, which is describing something by comparing it to something else, like, ‘the daffodils danced in the breeze,’ they were not actually dancing but swaying in the wind. That figurative is personification, which is giving human qualities to an animal, plant or a non-lving thing. We are now looking at Ride of Passage, a movie short about a boy who goes on an exciting ride through the rainforest, we used our figurative language from our poetry to help us write a setting description and have been sequencing by attempting to open sentences with adjectives for example my sentence was, ‘Bored and embarassed, Toki slowly placed the olive green frog onto his head, he was ready to hunt.’ I really like the story, as it is interesting we are going to be using drama next week to help us understand the story better, I can’t wait.

In math’s we have been multiplying and dividing, it started off quite tricky but we have been getting better and better, especially at problem solving, we are even writing our own word problems, here is one of mine, I bought 7 packs of sweets, each pack has 4, how many sweets have I bought in total? If you know the answer you can answer below. We had a big problem lesson today and we had to use our perimeter learning along with our multiplcation and division to work out the perimeter of shapes, it was really tricky but after a lot of thinking and bar models, most of us solved it.

Thanks for reading.
